You connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Mistral, LM Studio, Ollama, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint with a custom URL.

Where it stands out:

• Chat Presets — switch model, system prompt, parameters, and tool set in one tap. If you juggle a coding model, a cheap daily model, and a web-search-enabled agent, this is the killer feature.
• MCP support (Pro) — connect any MCP server per chat, so the assistant can use tools like web search and fetch.
• Themes, styled export, backup, usage stats — Sepia/Nord/Gruvbox-style themes, PDF/HTML/Markdown export with math and code highlighting, one-file backup/restore, and per-reply token/speed stats.
• Vendor-free by design — there is no hosted AI service inside the app, so there is nothing to upsell you and no middleman on your requests.

The trade-offs: it's Apple-only for now (no Android/Windows), the free tier has message limits, and being a newer app its community is small.

Choose it if: you want a native iOS/iPadOS client, hate subscriptions, and care about MCP + presets in a local-first app.

Chatbox AI — the cross-platform workhorse

Chatbox AI (chatboxai.app) started as a desktop client and grew into a full cross-platform family. You can use it purely with your own API keys, or buy a hosted plan that bundles model access. Data sync across devices is the main reason people pick it.

Heads-up on two things. First, its iOS app was temporarily delisted around June 2025 over a trademark dispute and returned by late 2025 — still listed as of September 2026. The episode highlights an ongoing confusion: Chatbox AI (the BYOK client) is a different product from "ChatBox – AI Chat with Chatbot," a subscription chatbot app by another company with a very similar name and 100k+ App Store ratings. Check the seller before you download either.

Second, MCP is part of Chatbox's hosted Pro and Pro+ plans (MCP Service), not the free BYOK client's core pitch. If you stay on your own keys only, don't assume agentic MCP tools are available the same way.

Choose it if: you live on Windows/Linux/Android too and want one client and cloud sync everywhere.

OpenCat — native, flexible, subscription-based

OpenCat (Early Moon) is a veteran native Apple client that has kept pace well: as of September 2026 it supports MCP, local models, API keys, cloud subscription models, and Apple Intelligence in one app. That flexibility is its superpower — and unlike BayesChat today, it already ships on Mac as well as iPhone and iPad.

The pricing model is the trade-off: the premium experience is subscription- based, and its cloud-usage option passes through token costs with Apple's 30% cut deducted from what you pay — convenient, but you're paying more per token than going direct with your own key.

Choose it if: you want a native Apple app with maximum model-source flexibility (including Mac) and don't mind a subscription.

Geeps — native BYOK at the same one-time price

Platforms: iPhone, iPad (native); Mac available Pricing: Free with limits; Plus $14.99 one-time + API use

Geeps is the closest pricing peer to BayesChat: native Apple BYOK, one-time unlock around $14.99, no hosted AI upsell. It leans into custom accent / background / text colors and a prompt library, plus built-in web tools.

Where it differs from BayesChat: no MCP server support (built-in web tools only), Chat Presets are prompt-library style rather than full model + tools bundles, live rendering streams without math, and backup is iCloud-sync oriented rather than a single portable file.

Choose it if: you want a polished native BYOK client at one-time pricing and care more about visual customization than MCP or preset-driven workflows.

TypingMind — the power user's web app

Platforms: Web (self-hostable), installable as PWA — no native iOS app Pricing: One-time license from $39 (Standard), $79 Extended, $99 Premium (check current App Store / site pricing), then pay per API use

TypingMind is the BYOK pioneer: a browser-based frontend for every major model, with plugins, agents, and a self-host option (every license includes the offline static web app). The one-time license is genuinely yours forever.

The catch on iPhone is precisely that it's a web app: no native widgets, no system-level integration, and the experience is browser-shaped. Power users who live in the desktop browser love it; iPhone-first users usually bounce off it.

Choose it if: you mostly work in a desktop browser and want plugins and self-hosting more than a native mobile experience.

Do BYOK apps see my API key? A well-built one doesn't: the key should live in your device's secure storage and requests should go straight from your device to the provider. BayesChat stores keys in the Apple Keychain and has no backend at all.
